Every year, they set up challenges, they have a lot of fun and of course, they drink cider.

And in both of these spanish comedies, the first ones I see in my whole life, they make such a caricature of French girls...

Audiences are different whether you go to a musical show or theatre. I prefer to draw in a musical show audience.

Flamenco

The last drawing is usually the best :

The hand, the eye feel more confident.

They say it's the hand and not the eye which orders to the brain : "I want to draw this !"

Going to the Prado (and just before meeting Sorolla again, hmmm!), I stop by a tourists' guitar player.

Madrilene Epiphany

Every year after Christmas, as a good French girl, I rush back to Madrid on January the 2nd : in France, Wise men, dunno.

Why would have I changed my timetable this year ?
I finally felt lucky to discover I had a free week in Madrid... Maybe too lonely and idle for me. I combed through the "Madrid digest", and I decided that I would visit a museum each day, and then see a show each night, on my own, to delight in culture, and draw draw draw.

Delacroix - Orientalismissimo

I really enjoyed Madrilene Epiphany, my artistic epiphany. Maybe I'll do it again !

Day 1 : Exhibition Delacroix + Thyssen Museum + exhibition Berthe Morisot + Show Ballet and Flamenco.

What I prefered : discovering the influence of what I saw during the day on my drawings at night, seating in the first row, right below the flamenco dancers' heels, tacata tacata tacata... My heart following them, leaving me without breath... and my pen without guide... Gosh ! Impressed I am !

An Antarctic post for this polar wind

Dear Françoise,

As there is such a polar wind blowing through Europe, I draw your office, the most beautiful office in the world : the ice field.

I'd like to thank you for sending me a greeting card. It arrived just at the beginning of january. What a surprise to notice the sending day : October, 25th !!! The postman is not coming everyday on the South Pole...

Fantastic detail, you got your own stamp : a penguin, of course !

Thank you so much for sending me a picture of your "house", under a magnificient aurora borealis.

It must be such an experience to live in the Antarctic Base, to share moments over there with people and animals, and realise a dream.

I really enjoy to follow you on your blog : your stories are really nice and your pictures allow us to see where you live, your everyday life with penguins Adélie, adventure !!!

I also enjoy the baker's blog, faipacho (itscold) !!! How does he dare preparing you ice creams ??? And his religieuses with chocolate in a penguin shape seem to be delicious : mancholigieuses, miam miam :)

Skyscrapers - Madrid

Madrid's architecturereally is fascinating. The "Everything is possible" town, no fear,giving an amazing result. We can deeply feel the Iberian presence on thefaçades : pride, magnitude, assertion.

Architecture is the reflectof a personality full of pride and toughness.

So when you get to seethese fantastic skyscrapers on Madrid's skyline, you come to dream to go uponce. Hopefully, at once, the dream comes true...

Above : 4 emblematicMadrid's skyscrapers from the Kio Tower.

Below : Espacio Tower justbefore I went on the top of it… The lift rushes up so fast, the body fights against height effects… Strange effect. Up there, you can see the sunset on themountains, and all the lights turned on little by little just like fireflies…

Madrid is hiding treasures,like this view of the Bernabeu Stadium from another skyscraper here...

From the statue's feet, Ihave a perfect point of view on the towers' perspective… and the ambulances' dance.Just behind me, the children hospital "Peace".

Drawing the towers whilewinter night's approaching makes me freezing. I rush in the closest bar, andrealise it's the hospital's. Children are sliding on their rolling-drip-set.

It's crowdy there, and therearen't that much tables. A family sits by my side. Gipsies with a proud foreheadand strong eyes. A couple, weather-beatenold man, and black hair clenched teeth old woman – two big guys follow them. Ablond woman joins up. Suddenly, one of the tall guys jumps with shakingshoulders, and cracks up in tears.

Then the others are unableto keep theirs anymore, they start to cry, but silently, proudly.

The young blond lady driesher big blue eyes and supports the others with a strong look : "Didn't youhear what the doctor said : for the child, everybody's here, doctors, nurses,everybody, everybody. But for the family… We have to be strong."

34th sketchcrawl - Madrid.

And my first one !

Meeting at Madrid Rio, Madrid's rebuilt river.

The subject was ADN bridge, un énorme tuyau de fer qui permet aux piétons de traverser le fleuve. It was sunny, there were many drawers, and the park was full of life thanks to families, children's games, bikes' horns, and seagulls' laughs.

A perfect moment to be drawn !

And a good opportunity to meet De vuelta et Urban sketchers.

Gijon en mi corazón

L'Alliance Française de Gijon invited me to give workshops in Francophone schools.

I told the students that the weather goes crazy everywhere I go : from the senegalese monsoon to the yemenite flood, rain is the connecting thread between my trips !

You get to learn how to draw in the rain...

That's why I wasn't surprised when a storm fell on Gijon just after my arrival there ! And I must say I was happy about it, because the seaside looked awesome. I had never seen it like this even if I grew-up by the sea. The beach had been closed. The waves were breaking just like monsters, as if they were willing to eat the walkers around who were hypnotized by their tremendous show...

From the morning to the evening, it did not calm down.

I had already drawn the sea while I first came to Gijon, so glassy ! (drawings here)

I had just read a sentence written by Delacroix, in Normandy, where I grew-up as a matter of fact : "glitter on the waves' upper side."

I think about pinters when I'm watching the seaside. Monet left several easels over there...

In Gijon, lively harbour, you can find fishermen little bars. If you ask for the boss' speciality, they'll bring you a fantastic coffee, sure they will. Coffee, whipped cream, flambéed brandy : you'll fall for it...

Happy new year, may it be soft...

In Yemen, I lived in the countryside with farmers. They used to cultivate the local drug : el qât. Mountains of drug.

And I reached the artificial paradise without it, thanks to a fantastic dysentery. I couldn't stand up, neither eat, total delirium. I just felt a huge happiness... We call it fever.

All my women-neighbours came to say a last good bye. Even women crying on my sad destiny. But I still felt happy, like drunk ! (When I had been travelling for months in countries prohibiting alcohol !)

In this village, I was living at Om Ibrahim's house (meaning Ibrahim's mother). She often came to watch over me. She obliged me to drink bun, a sort of hot beverage made of coffee peel. And she put in my mouth big spoons of honey, the honey from Yemen, the Koran holy honey. That's how they healed me. The best medicine ever !

Om Ibrahim looks like the woman I drew above, in a certain way.

I inspired myself from a wrought iron Nativity I saw in Gijon last week :

A philosophic artist, Fouad Dakhouch, just sent me an article. It says that when we see the death really close, we keep in mind 5 elements importants for our life :

- To have the courage to live a life true to ourself ;

- To work only the needed to be ;

- To express our feelings ;

- To stay in touch with our friends ;

- To let ourself be happy.

It's fantastic to let go and smile again, without waiting to meet the death. And this because the only thing left when we meet it are people we love and feelings. We forget the rest. The rest becomes useless. Maybe it's always been.

This week, I was in Madrid and I allowed myself to do something I never do : going out. I begun with visiting the exhibition Hermitage, at the Prado Museum. It inspired me a modern Nativity, and then a really modern Nativity :

Saragosse

I'm going to give a workshop at l'Institut Français.

There is no obligation to stay on earth, as we say in France !

The train leaves crossing an amazing sunrise...

L'Institut français de Saragosse is so warm, well settled in a fantastic place. Beautiful pieces of earthenware on walls and floors...

What a nice place to exhibit extracts of my book "Los viajes", organised by the French Embassy.

We begin the workshop downtown : a square destroyed by Napoléon...

As it is quite cold, we go on in an original bar. Modern lamps mixed with colums: perfect exercise to set up the decor, people and collages...

On the afternoon, I meet Clara Marta and De vuelta con el cuaderno. We draw somptuous arabic churches. Saragosse hides amazing mudejar art !

And the Plata !

Going to Saragosse missing the Plata, this strip-tease "estilo movida"cabaret, would be like going to Venice missing gondoles...

Fantastic show !

Flamenco is what I prefered.

Sometimes it's so fantastic, we just watch and forget to draw it!

Carmen - The woman around the corner

The woman around the corner, Carmen, has just died.

The soul of Malasaña's district - Madrid.

Hard to believe.

The neighbours keep on bringing her coffee as ever, they put it down at her working place : the corner of the street. Children stick full of hearts - drawings on her wall, several sweets... Shopkeepers offer her flowers, nice words on pieces of paper, fruits... Everyone stops for a while in the suddenly so quiet corner :

hard to believe she's gone.

She had been selling stuff here for 66 years, even if the weather was bad... Always there.

Quite a character ! 80 years old... With such a strong personnality, such a cockney accent.

Meeting her and her daughter in a shop around, we could hear her saying suddenly :

"Hombre hija, he dejado el puesto solo, y el aceite qué?"

"Hey girl ! I've left my stand alone, and what about my stuff ?"

But nobody would have touched anything, because everybody knew it was Carmen's basket, even if she were not there.

Carmen went away, she lets us with a big emptiness, and the nostalgy of the old Madrid she took away with her...

Extremadura's colors, in perfect harmony with nature and human buildings. Good model!

Olive green, red ground, burgundy vineyards, yellow fields...

Even in the rain !

Out of Spain, we usually think this country comes with seaside and eternal sunshine. Doesn't work ! Going to the south, nearly till the portuguese border, you cross high mountains in an eternal rainfall : end of n°1 cliché.

In the morning, be brave : pour your breakfast in coffee. There's nothing to laugh about "migas", which are fried bread crumbs served with entire garlic and pepper.

And guess what : it's delicious !

Teacher's Formation Centre in Zafra.

I give a workshop to teachers from Zafra and surroundings. We work in French on the town's details. Drawing can be a good and funny way to discover our everyday's atmosphere. Good to use with their students !
During the long southern morning, the rain was so strong I had to shelter in churches. Church is not the right word for those gorgeous abbeys, huge convents, decorated by mudejar artists (those who converted to catholicism to stay after muslims had to leave Spain). Great orientalist castles where you can see the Christ under a magnificient stucco sculpted ceiling, surrounded by the wrotten decoratively sentence "Allah is great."

Besides, do you know how to say "may the peace be with you" in arabic? "Salam Aleikoum", the sentence we repeat at the catholic church. Everything meets up.

Difficult to organise a workshop in the storm.

El parador, the hotel-castle of Zafra, offers us to open their doors for us: we discover two wonderful rooms, the chapel and the nuptial suite, full of fantastic mudejar art. No one would guess which treasures the seem-to-be simple Zafra's houses hide behind their white wall.

But the most amazing thing is to feel like being in Yemen. In Spain !

During the VIII century, many arabs came from Yemen following Caliph Abdel Rahmane, excluded from Bagdad and settling in "a fertile and heavenly place at the end of Mediterranean See."

Zafra is such a magic city, you can't miss it !

Sacrifice day - Aid in Arabic, Kurban in Turkish.

Today begins the Aid, sacrifice day for Muslims. The biggest celebration I've ever seen.

Alexandria (Egypt) - 2006, December 31st.

The night has already fallen down, it's raining. Alexandria's harbour lights up, its surroundings also, music going high.

We walk on the street and our trousers quickly get dirty, mud and bloodstains. Animals are quietly waiting for their turn to come on the sidewalk, resigned to it.

We're walking through cow's legs and sheep's heads without being surprised that much. We're taken in the celebration's move.

I can see a man throwing up in the corner, it nearly reassures me.

The strong smell of blood and guts, people's excitement, blood pools everywhere, cows legs, shanks, enormous ribs, rounded pauches...

Cats fight for a piece of it. Some men cut up a carcass.

I cross with a guy who seems really tired, all red faced of blood and fatigue... Flowing blood strenghten souls. I use it to draw my sketches, to the great surprise of the just-for-one-day butchers.

- Allo Johnny ? Hi, I need to work before Monday. I'll come to the agency. A job at the old dock for one week ? Ok. Bye !

Friends' bar

In Normandy, the Friends' bar is full of fishermen after tide. When I came back from Middle-East, I went there to enjoy my first beer after six months on an only tea diet. It's been my pilgrimage since then. You'll always find astonishing people here. This time, two women around a kir (withe wine with raspberry liqueur)...

"Hey, we're going to have our little sea therapy. You didn't forget the knife ? Or we'll use a key. Ah la la ! Delicious! But it's so difficult to reach the bottom of this shellfish, when it's the best of course ! Pull, pull ! Got it ! Hmmm ! So well spiced !"

The boss of the bar comes around. In France, no food with your drink. It's normal that clients bring their own then. Even the boss can join : "Enjoy, ladies ! Is there a bit of seashells for me ?"

"Of course ! Take E-the* knife !"

*In Normandy we say "eeel" instead of "le".

In Dives, we celebrate Normandy's millenium (It was full of English people by the way). As there is a fantastic comic shop in this little fishermen's village (Baie des bulles), they invited the illustrator of the comic 1066. You can see the work (and pictures of Dives !) of Emanuele Tenderini.

Intendente Lisbon - Not such a bad area anymore

First time in Lisbon, nearly. Alone.

Intendente, Lisbon's exotic area.

This woman from Pakistan smiles to me.

Not alone anymore !Almiranda Rey, my favourite street.

Old stores, local cook-shops, sprightful talks on the street... And the walls.
Behind the walls, you can hear people. Couples speaking on balcony, having coffee in the morning. An old lady hangs out her stockings to dry. Children from the social centre sing portuguese songs : wonderful.
At noon, cook-shops are full. Soup, stew, cakes. A lot of old people come to eat by themselves. Workers also. Portugueses, Africans, Asiatics, no tourist.

Suddenly, the boss shows my drawing and shouts in English : "Hey, you want people to think only girls work in Portugal ? Where are the waiters and the counter ?" And he gives me a napkin where he's drawn the 3 waiters behind the counter...
In Intendente, there's a park with farmyard animals. Even a peacok who calls his own reflection in a window. And an aggressive duck, the only danger of Intendente, when it's said to be a dangerous area. Rehabilitation seems to work.

Japanese sketchbook - Urban sketchers - Lisbon

Along the Tagus River, at sunset, inmigrates watch the tankers pass by. Maybe it reminds them a similar moment with their family in their country, along a similar river. Rivers are good at waking nostalgy up...

A moment before, at the Rubi Ginginha Bar.

Costa drinks a beer leaning on a bin, near the door. Workers stop by a few minutes. Vito gives them strong liqueur to help. Strong liver. The bar is full of workers going to work. It's Sunday...

Costa seems to scan you with his deep blue eyes. When we don't speak the same language, we speak with our body, instinctively.

An old homeless comes several times to swallow liqueur. Later, he'll be unconscious on the street, nobody cares.

Costa explains life is hard in Portugal. He couldn't afford to have more than one child. I ask Costa and Vito if they have internet to send them the drawing. No, they don't.

Costa sees the logo of Belas Artes de Lisboa on my sketchbook. He took part in some wall fixing there. He used to escape to have a look at students' creations. Suddenly, he kisses my cheek and goes away, time to go back to work.

Sol - meetings again

In Madrid, we can see season's graffiti like this one (portrait of Madrid Region president, whose name is Hope...).

Also twitter keys as #nopararemos (#we ain't stop), and other agressive sentences such as those seen on Segovia bridge : "Bankers, jump ! Politics, jump !".

At Sol, meetings start again at 8pm. The first speaker smiles "Wonderful to see you back here guys !".

Talks about vote, elections, pope's visit...

One of the speakers ends his speach : "Better risk to lose than losing without risking at all."

Sometimes, silence gets long between two speakers. An old chap shakes a sign to keep us focused : "They call it democracy and it ain't one !"

The most impressive is an old lady, Angustias, who gives her advice in a tough castillan !

"So good to see you all gathered here, as carnation flowers ! (Portuguese pacific revolution.)

Pope's visit : he'd better stay in Italy, bloody hell !

And won't they dare come to tell us Spain is poor. Ought to have huge paints to face this !

And don't turn the second cheek !

With Vatican's money, they could turn off hunger of all the children in the world !

Better hold up hands than living on our knees like them.

Just wish a Jesus would come just as they tell us so in the Bible...

The demonstration begins surrounding the Atocha round-about, important trafic place of Madrid. Three helicopters fly over us : nice atmosphere !

Many people already, and live broadcast on internet done thanks to i-phones up on broomsticks.

A man who was injured by the riot police holds the word "PEACE", old people knock on pans with their stick... Clear message : all the generations are in the street, and the police keeps low profile.

But just in case, we're given stickers with "VERY FRAGILE" on them to put on our face.

We go up the Castellana, main avenue of Madrid, walking backwards, "backwards against this system !" : "Vamos de culo con este sistema !"
The crowd suddenly shuts up, arriving in front of the Department of the interior. Magistral silence !

All the hands rise up and shake in the air, holding carnation flowers, without noise...

Then a big scream : crowd boos the minister, hissing out loud. "Less police, more education !"

"There's not enough bread for so much chorizo (bribes)!"

Someone shouts : "Vamos a Sol !" Let's go to Sol !

And the crowd takes it up "Vamos a Sol, que la plaza no es del papa !"

"Let's go to Sol, cause it's not the pope's place !"

Now the 200 000 people move on, singing "Then they'll say we were 5 or 6 !"
Going up to Sol, a great feeling shakes people. The atmosphere was so strange this week ! Madrid was far too silent...

The whole crowd sings : "TONIGHT THE SUN (SOL) WILL RISE-UP !"

People reach Sol square laughing, hugging, kissing. They stick posters everywhere and start assemblies again. It's back on !

Sol - Surrealist...

Sol, blocus on Alcala st., 19 h 30.

Sol square still closed.

A woman stops by the barrier with her daughter, calls someone, then stands silent watching the empty square above cops' shoulders.

Suddenly, a woman wearing a white coat comes by with a little bag. She takes glasses out of it, breaks through policemen's wall and reaches the barrier in front of mother and daughter.

The mother excuses herself : "I came at 3 pm, but no way to reach your store."

The optician : "No problem. Ok girl, let's try these glasses on !" And the optician puts the glasses on the little girl's nose above the barrier, still between two policemen.

"Not bad ! Is it ok for you ?"

The little girl says yes nodding, happy. The mummy pays the optician above the barrier. It looks like a war movie scene...

People around watch it pretty shocked, smiling nervously, thinking : "Surrealist !" They take out their mobile and tell it on facebook and twitter.

Bip bip bip, people don't only speak out loud, they send their ideas in the air...

At night, at the outdoor movies, they show Quadrophenia by The Who.

At the beginning of the movie, the technician puts on the wrong subtitles.

And that's how we discover that 15M has become a language : public uses the 15M assemblies language to express it. Later, the film shows fights between people and cops : huge silence in the public. Police helicopter every 5 minutes above us reminds us there's a cold war atmosphere over here.

Sol - The quiet before the storm

Yesterday, Puerta del Sol, 19 h 30.

Silence all over this normally noisy square, we can even hear the clock's bell, so strange. It's crowdy, but everyone keeps silent, watching what's happening. Never seen this before. The quiet before the storm...

Policemen slowly surround the square. Cleaners are nearly done with destroying 15M's vegetable patch. Increasing emotion.

Indignados suddenly rush in, besides the blocus (including closed subway)

A woman holds tight her baby on her chest. She sings "This, this isn't democracy !"

A cop asks her to go away : "A baby in the demonstration, it's not reasonable !"

The crowd answers : "The shit we let for her, that is not reasonable !"

At last, the woman is evacuated, as the crowd who has to leave.

I'm drawing in the middle of the square, my hand is shaking, such an emotion, when I feel somebody pushing me : police boots us out ! I won't finish my drawing.

With my friend the photographer Carlotta Tofani, we get back to Alcala street. People who live on the street can't go home. Tension...

At last, the demonstration moves to Plaza Mayor.

Today, the police comes back to close the square again.

The policemen surround it. A woman walks quietly silently in front of them with a sign : "Dear cops, they use you and abuse you as much as us. Support us for democratic rights."

Then cops relaxed and unfolded their arms, smiling...

In Madrid, day and night helicopter's noise apart, life goes on, bars are full of people. But around Sol, there is still emotion...

Now we go for the moon...

In Madrid's artists block, Malasaña, new historic signs appear on walls, signed "People of Madrid" :

"Power is scared of us because revolt tends to love..."

"Already got the Sun (Sol), now we go for the moon..."

"Your parents told you 1968, you'll tell your children 2011..."

In Sol, there's still an information point, but it's surrounded by satellites which are not part of the movement. A volunteer tells me : "La acampada is this only green tent. The others are out of it. On the 23rd of July, 23000 people came here walking from the whole country. Not bad ! But we are told to be put out of Sol. We'll go on on internet."

Back from Portugal, we pay much more attention to the movement. The situation is worse overthere.

ONG's are surprised that in Irak, debt was called odious and just cancelled like this.

Meanwhile, the problem is huge out of Europe :

Urban sketchers - Lisbon

Before we get started, USK provides us different fantastic sketchbooks. I grab a card at the bar near Belas Artes to craft my name on it.

First workshop: influence of cars on street life - Joao Ramos.

I forgot cars : so fond of people ! And I'm just introduced to Lisbon fellows.

I'd have loved to travel with Claude Levi-Strauss, that's why I chose this workshop. We soon discover that our instructor Joao Ramos, an ethnologue, is studying "sketchers studying people on the street"... Impressive !

Urban sketchers are quite at ease drawing together in public places. Being part of the group allows not to be so shy, great !

As we are on the firemen's place, we think of Toño's amazing fire trucks...

Through the exercice, I see the difficulty of living on a hill, above all for a pregnant woman, hard gravity balance. And I'm amazed by people speaking to each other, so different in France. I am surprised to see so many maids, in uniform like in the XIXth century. It's the same in Spain.

At night, we gather down town. Symposium gives us nice surprises, life's presents : I've not seen David Magli for ages. We share artistic experiences while drawing this street singer. Such a good musician too, could be noticed as Keziah Jones was in Paris subway.

Second workshop : Lisbon ruins - Clara Marta and Guida Casella.

First shock : drawing part of Lisbon ruins, from 1755 earthquake, the one which made Voltaire change his vision of life. "Life is short, everything can change" (find it in his book Candide)

Second shock : attend to a workshop with impressive architects ! And we share our notebook... Both students and instructors have such a high level in USK !

We have a coffee together to fight the cold wind. I discover nice old ladies from Lisbon, whether on the street or watching us through their windows. Lisete, a portuguese sketcher seating next to me, tells me they have mermaids in the Tagus river, and I believe her ! No wonder why I illustrate children books.

Third workshop : lining over colour - Richard Camara :

Hard to get ! I stick to reality and habits.

Finally I get it : first the silhouette of the sky, then windows, then shade...

Line is option. Sounds good to me !

While drawing, an injured guy falls in front of me. I want to help him but he refuses. He looks exhausted and finds artificial paradises to stand it. There are many poor lost guys around. What you hear on the news suddenly becomes real.
We go to the museum nearby. Guides follow us secretly to see the transformation of their treasures on paper. At the end, the ticket officer shouts at me "Come here, wanna stamp your sexy drawing." In English please, cause they are so good at speaking languages in Portugal !

Fourth workshop : Movement - Eduardo Salavisa and Monica Cid.

Let's go to the station and draw people, and better the same one, twice in different moves !

At first sight, stations are the same all around the world : people running everywhere.

While drawing, you get noticing local details, such as typical populations (gipsies, inmigrates from Angola, sunny fashion girls. And lots of colours, when Parisian people seem to wear only black and white.)

Really enjoyed drawing people from above an escalator !

Fifth workshop : sketch mix - Pedro Fernandes (PeF) and Joao Moreno.

I did not end my below drawing, lack of time. I went to see the others' work, and get a chance to know about their experience. Also part of the Symposium's greatness ! Kim tells me about the 60 persons' USK group in Paris, huge ! Mariana (Marianaarquitecta) feels free with mixing two views of the street, so original !

I thought this drawing below was kind of lost, but it was without relying on its destiny : on my way to the airport, I found two wonderful wires.
We also had to draw 3 views of the same thing. I chose pigeons, typical of Lisbon. But they kept on moving a lot. PeF, who's a bird specialist, showed me the fountain was full of wasps. Easier to draw the fountain itself maybe !
This one was about composing a picture with 3 elements + background, all from different views.

Sometimes you get recomposing different views together as if they were the same one : sometimes hand and eye work together without caring about what brain tells them. Freeky !

It was going to rain.

But I had never seen the Granja castle, a copy of Versailles. A French couldn't miss it !

And a French is used to the rain...

I was right : it was raining on the village, and sunny in the garden.

The park is beautiful, just like Versailles, but in the mountain.

There are games imported from French Court, games of borred rich people.

Back to the village, I was told :

"Don't worry, storms stay in the mountain..."

But paf ! It felt right on us ! A lot !

Tell me about storms staying in the mountain, such a good one !

Back to Madrid where it's sunny, logic, I climb up Correos' tower.

It's all brand new!

Your mission, if you accept it : draw quickly before guards throw you out

And down, a telecommunications' cathedrale,

now cultural center, with a place to rest and speak :

"Of course you can still have children! Look at Carla Bruni !"

Walking home, I hear an old man shouting at me: "Never get married, do you hear me ? It's useless, you'd be losing your time !"

So many sentences floating in the air, but not all true !

Brand new for me!

Suddenly mingling with dozens of sketchers, dozens of styles, dozens of ideas...

It feels good to draw together down the street.

Meanwhile people tell us about their city :

"The torico sculpture is more important to us than the lovers."

Just around appears a clown, what a miracle ! I love making their portrait !

Back in Madrid without sketchers from De vuelta con el cuaderno...

But the spirit full of pictures and nice memories !

Acampada - Puerta del Sol - Madrid

La acampada - Madrid's apolitic camping group.

A spokesman says : "Everybody should know we are here to get what we want to get."

In the speakers :

" Prevent yourself from sun, it's hot. Drink water, alcohol is bad. We can be something else than generation botellon*"

*Botellon : square night meetings to speak and drink.On the square, I meet a French radio journalist. She asks me to translate her questions.

She interviews David :

"I am 39. I live at my parents' place, it's easier for me than sharing other's flat. I can't figure out my life, neither with somebody nor by myself. How could I with only 1000 euros ?

What does future mean to me ? That would be still having my job tomorrow, at list..." He's nearly crying.

The square is well organised, they even made a map of the campment.

Now they had to leave, but they still meet and think of changing and demonstrate together all over Spain.

Even if I have to stay at home to work, I can see what's going on with the spanish spontaneous demonstration on internet. Pacific and technologic revolution. And touching.

I am drawing here what I see through Spanish demonstration's live webcam, turning around Sol square's roofs.

This is to show internet gives now life to demonstrations, thanks to modern technology. I've been living in several countries where movments showed up: internet has been a big part of success. Above all in Egypt where censorship was so important. This is the era we are living in.

They've been watching Spanish movment in France and now they are thinking of doing it too. I have just spoken about it now on French national Radio, in an interview with "génération précaire".

Everything began with Stéphane Hessel's best seller book "Indignez-vous !". This 93 years old resistant of WWII reminds us that he has fought for our rights, and we are loosing them without saying anything. He shouts out loud "Indignation!".

He came to present his book in Spain, which has been a great success, and people now decide to follow his advice. He said he is happy about the spanish movment.

From Madrid to Sevilla, I never stopped drawing...

Rainy day, Andalucia looks a bit french. I admired exotic vegetation coming from Indias all over the gardens.

Rain made orange trees' flowers fall down. Their sweet perfume dances all around the streets.

At the Fnac, Sevilla's TV asks me to draw their town. I also realise a portrait of people getting ready for the famous Feria de Abril.

All the girls are already looking for their flamenca dress.
Another francophone artist is invited to La semana de la Francofonìa: Dominique A!

He presents a gorgeous voice, Laetitia Velma.

The two poets and musicians share so many emotions with us, a huge live event !

Last meeting at Sevilla : an old man telling his life over Europe, travelling with daughter and wife in his truck.

"Oh la la, northern Europe doesn't know olive oil, hein. Only butter ! Never got used to eat, but still eat it. Look how fatty I am."

I went across a long way of Santiago's path, but it's above all Alix de Saint André's book which inspired me : "En avant Route !"

Ignoring there is no celebration going on over there.

As Madrid is empty,

as we feel the houses bursting,

I feel the other side of the phone so quiet and silent...

New year will come later,

it will bring holidays ;

my brother will stroll around

and take magic pictures,

Wrecking in an airport

Scheduled "Madrid-Paris" flight : 23th of december at 21 h 30.

It's midnight and still in Madrid. The airport is empty, that's only us. A girl turns nuts and puts her ipod on the staff microphone : turning Barajas into a club, insane and awesome...
Another one shouts : "24th of december, merry christmas !"

Finally, at 1 h 40, a steward announces our boarding... A passenger jumps on him and kisses his cheek gratefully !
Here is what you aim to draw when you pass out dealing with long waiting hours.

My parents are great : they wait for me till 4 h 30, short night on Paris's armchairs...

And I know it so well : I slept here too on 8th of december, when easyjet refused to let me board, even if my ticket was good... Sometimes you feel like going crazy.

During the night at Paris CDG Airport, it gets really cold. The designer who chose the chairs fooled himself, they are so bad to our bodies... I am afraid to be robbed, I gather with other wreck passengers. Every 15 minutes, a cleaning machine weaks us up, cleaning team laughs out loud speaking in an eastern language. They remind me Florence Aubenas' book.

At 4 h 00, first employees show up wearing perfect suits.

Easyjet can't do anything for me, seems there has been a mistake... But if I want to fly home, I can buy a new ticket : 100 euros instead of 30. What do you think of Paris-Madrid train ?
28th of december : waiting for my flight Paris-Madrid. Same same.

A cloud in Casablanca and our flight is delayed. Pff, they can tell me anything they want, I am resigned. "A martian ate our aircraft's right wing and it needs to be fixed." Ok...
Even hostesses crack up. Such an office !

They know when they leave home, but they don't know when they'll be back.

1 h 30 am : we finally reach Madrid, 3 hours delayed, not so bad ! Except the pilot refuses to go further on tarmac because of "rubbish", he says. Big sigh in the aircraft...

French teaching workshop at Valladolid University

We work on French teaching, as we did in Burgos. I speak about an exercise about seeds, and believe it or not, I saw this huge seeds'shop just before :

French teaching workshop at the Burgos University

French Embassy and Burgos University invited me to share my experiences as teacher and author-illustrator with teachers of French FLE.

We studied how to motivate students to speak French, to study Literature having fun, and to deal with a difficult class.

They spoke about it in the Diario de Burgos :

*French Lesson at UBU. Michel Wattremez, Cooperation for French Officer at French Embassy, and Nieves Goicoechea, Lecturer at "Humanidades y Educacion" Burgos University organised a French Lesson, hosted by the expert and illustrator Emily Nudd-Mitchell, to which 60 Castilla y León teachers attended.

Wonderful experience : energising exchange with teachers who applauded me ! A mutual work to go on teaching French. Our language opens many doors all around the world.

Indeed, to go to Burgos' University, you just have to follow the Camino, the Santiago de Compostela way.

So symbolic !

Early in the morning, you cross with Lecturers, students and pilgrims ! I think of Alix de Saint André who surely walked here : I feel she's there. I meet two pilgrims, they already look tired and it's not even 9 am !

Burgos University is part of a beautiful place : King's hospital.

I can feel Leonor and Alfonso's ghosts blowing around...

They are buried in a Monastery, so well named after this French queen Leonor : "Las Huelgas", Strikes. It did not stop Napoleon's troops to plunder her grave.

How funny for a French to walk through Burgos asking : "Where is the strike ?"

And I even had time to draw in the Cathedral. Do you think it has a Mudejar structure ? Do you think it's the 8 branches star up there, of 8 Islam pillars ? Spain has been early an integration role-model.

I went to Cambodia one year ago to teach local amazing artists. You can see them here.

Then I went to Phnom Penh's garbage hill to visit the children living in, a drawn report here. As long as flowers will sprout on the garbage hill, there will be hope, isn’t it ? During summer, volunteers give workshops to children, so they won't go back to garbage working when they are off school : pictures here and children's libdub here. You can help them here !

Then I crossed Cambodia to reach Thai border, "made in bus" drawings here !

This young traveller draws the roads with watercolours ! She studied at Emile Cohl Art School in France, then began to cross countries. Now she comes back with beautiful sketchbooks, a brand new vision of the world.

Today she lives in Madrid. She dedicates herself to writing, illustrating and teaching. She also visits her family all around the world and teaches drawing in NGO.
